In some areas, the snow is already starting to melt, as small signs of spring approaching are becoming more apparent. The birds are returning, days are getting longer, and temperatures are ever so slowly inching upwards, but we’re still miles away from the gardening season. We know what it’s like to anxiously await this fantastical time of year, and it’s unsafe to get started just yet. Still, there are some things you can do to prepare for the up and coming months that will help to ensure a flawless transition when the time finally comes to get seedlings in the earth.

1. Clean up

After a whole winter, you might be surprised to find how many pieces of trash have wandered into your garden, and now is the perfect time to get it all cleaned up. If the snow has melted completely, weeding might even be possible, which will cut down on the amount of work you’ll need to do later once the temperatures warm up.

2. Till the soil

As the ground slowly warms up, it becomes possible to break out the tiller or a shovel and get to work breaking up the soil in your gardens. Of course, by the time you’re ready to plant, it might need to be worked over again, but by then, entire ecosystems will be thriving, and the dirt should be soft enough to blend with minimal destruction and effort. It’s not the best job, and yet still, it needs to be done, so why not get a head start on the task?

3. Take care of pre-existing greenery

It might be way too early to get started cultivating cannabis plants in the garden however it’s the perfect time of year to tend to other plants in particular bulbs, which need to be broken up and spaced out. Bushes can be trimmed with ease, and any other plants in the ground may be moved around to make room for the incoming crop. It’s not quite as exciting as growing cannabis, but it’ll lift your spirits and make the rest of the season so much easier to tackle.

4. Up your composting game

If you’re not composting already, then now is the perfect time to begin because it will take several weeks before anything you make now will be ready to add to your cannabis garden. For those who have already taken up this task, now is the time to add any additional nutrients that might be needed to reduce the acidity of the compost. It’s stinky and messy but also an integral step if you want to succeed at this whole cultivation thing.

5. Get those seedlings ordered and started

It’s still a little bit early to get started on your cannabis garden, however, it’s the ideal point to start looking for seeds to use this growing season. In some regions, it might even be late enough to get some seeds started indoors, which should help to quell your drive to get started on gardening.

Reminder

If you’re in a region with four-season, we’re still several weeks away from precious growing time in our gardens, but this list should give you enough tasks to keep busy while you wait.
